Gilbert was incorporated in 1920, making it one of the younger cities in Arizona. The original purpose of the town was to place a rail line between Florence and Phoenix. This led to rail siding being placed on Bobby Gilbert's property. When a town grew around this rail line in the early 1900s, it was only natural to name the town Gilbert due to where the rail lines were placed. In the beginning, prior to incorporation, the town was mainly agriculturally based. At this point, the town was known as the Hay Capital of the World.
Today, Gilbert is an established suburb of the metropolitan Phoenix area. Gilbert is home to more than 135,000 residents from all walks of life. Moving to Gilbert means you can enjoy small, single family homes, gated communities, or high rise apartments. There truly is something for everyone. The schools in Gilbert have been nationally recognized for their excellence. Employment sectors include everything from education and healthcare to retail and Phoenix is close by, offering additional opportunities for residents of the city. Recreational options include sports events, annual festivals and fairs, shopping, and world class dining just to name a few.
